The amino acid L-arginine is the direct precursor of nitric oxide, while the amino acid L-citrulline can also increase arginine levels in the blood. The amino acids L-citrulline and L-arginine are important precursors of the body's own vasodilator nitric oxide (NO), which causes blood vessels to widen and thus contributes to better blood circulation. While L-arginine is the direct precursor of NO, L-citrulline can be converted into L-arginine in the body and thus increase the arginine levels in the blood. In order to produce the vasodilating nitric oxide from citrulline and arginine, an enzyme is required: endothelial nitric oxide synthase, or eNOS for short.
