L-carnitine is a compound naturally produced by the body that transports fatty acids from the inside of the cell to the cells' "powerhouses," the mitochondria. Once the fatty acids reach the mitochondria, they are "burned" (oxidized) in a process that generates energy in form of the body´s energy "currency" adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
Although we absorb L-carnitine primarily through animal products and can also produce it ourselves from the essential amino acids L-lysine and L-methionine, some athletes want to support their bodies by taking additional L-carnitine.
